Dating agencies for adults with learning disabilities are a vital service that help individuals have an active, engaging social life but more are needed across the UK. This research was part of a wider project exploring support for adults with learning disabilities to find loving relationships. Across the UK there are just a dozen such dating services , with only one covering London and none in counties such as Kent and Cornwall. They are all run as charitable organisations and rely on funding to operate. The researchers profiled 10 of these services , nine in England and one in Scotland, speaking with staff, their users and their families, to inform the findings. Overall, they found that the agencies play a major role in helping members have an active social life. This ranges from facilitating social events for people to meet one another such as discos, meals and outdoor events, through to direct matchmaking between people for one-to-one dates.

Unfortunately for many people with learning disabilities, this is just a dream. Although they may want to be in a relationship, they are often faced with barriers and challenges that prevent them finding what many take for granted.
But specialised dating agencies can help to provide the support they need to meet new people and find romance. People with learning disabilities, like everyone else, have a need for affectionate and intimate relationships. Not only do these beliefs hold people with learning disabilities back from relationships, they also infringe on their human right to privacy and a family life, as outlined in Article 8 of the Human Rights Act My research explores the views and experiences of women with learning disabilities on sexual relationships and as part of my PhD I gave them a platform to talk openly about this taboo subject.

Natalie Valios reports on a project to promote well-being and fight loneliness that is winning admirers. While friendship is something most people take for granted, it can be more elusive for people with learning disabilities. Research conducted by learning disability charity Hft in with the people it supported in Leeds found meaningful friendships and relationships were the biggest things missing from their lives. Hft sought advice from Stars in the Sky , a London-based dating and friendship service for people with learning disabilities, and in Stars in the Sky Yorkshire was born.
L2MU runs several social events each month for members, and provides a matching service for people wanting to develop a relationship. All of this has a clear social care focus. One is Bradford Council. The project is also run in Calderdale, north-east Derbyshire and Sheffield, and a support development worker is being recruited for Kirklees. Social care workers often refer individuals to the service and project staff also signpost members to appropriate professionals for support, for example around sexuality and sexual health issues.
But with the Big Lottery funding due to come to an end in March and local authorities often only putting in money for the first year, it is looking for future funding opportunities. We would also like there to be a service level agreement with local authorities so that we become part of their core funding structure. The aim was always to turn the service into a community interest company CIC — a form of social enterprise — so that it had it own legal identity and was run as its own business.
With this in mind, Hft decided to rename the agency in and members chose the name Luv2meetU.
